On this day in 1893, Tchaikovsky conducted the world premiere of his final symphony, Symphony No. 6 ‘Pathétique’ in St. Petersburg. “Now THERE is a melody, a pure orchestral song, known and loved to the outer reaches of the civilized world. In fact, to many people this series of notes is almost synonymous with the word “melody”; its immediacy of appeal, it rising and falling line, its yearning and resignation – all these have identified it as the essence of late romanticism.” -Leonard Bernstein
