The Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout in Tahoe National Forest blends outdoor adventure with history. Built in 1915 and redesigned in 1963 with its now-famous 180 aluminum steps, the tower rises 8,587 feet above sea level. Fire lookout towers have a long history in the state of California, and many lookouts throughout the state are still staffed to help detect and respond to wildfires quickly. Our lookout towers are positioned in locations where they can most optimally spot new wildfires. Because of this, these locations are also susceptible to the impacts of wildfire activity. This video shows the extreme fire behaviour and growth experienced on the wildfires in the Pembina complex earlier this month, which unfortunately resulted in this lookout tower being impacted by the fire.
