MAUNAKEA ST. In the ahupuaʻa of Honolulu, which lies in the moku of Kona here on Oʻahu, stands one of the oldest named streets on the island. We are speaking of Maunakea St. Officially named on August 30, 1850, Maunakea Street is one of the first 35 officially named streets in Honolulu. Mauna Kea, meaning “white mountain,” is one of the five volcanoes that formed the island of Hawaiʻi. Also known as Mauna a Wākea, translated as “mountain of Wākea,” the name brings attention to Hawaiian stories.
