Roses need to be left alone to go dormant in late summer. So we don’t fertilize after August 1 because that will promote new growth. New growth takes 3 to 4 months to harden off to survive winter. We also don’t want to prune or even deadhead the flowers off because that’s also going to encourage new growth which doesn’t have enough time to prepare for winter. We also know that it is not a good idea to pile up mulch, compost or cover our roses with a cone because those will trap, moisture and war

I always leave it until the last minute, but as long as your soil is workable, you can still plant your spring blooming bulbs like daffodils, tulips, Hyacinth, etc. I usually leave at this late because there are such great markdowns on the price of bulbs in November.
