N.J. declares state of emergency with up to 9 inches of snow, wintry mix looming in winter storm
A state of emergency has been declared throughout New Jersey as a quick, but powerful winter storm is expected to dump 4 to 9 inches of snow and sleet across much of the state. The state of emergency takes effect at 1 p.m. and includes all 21 counties. A commercial vehicle restriction takes effect at 3 p.m.
Up to nine inches (23cm) of snow could fall across the New York region during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
Airlines canceled more than 1,200 U.S. flights on Friday ahead of a large winter storm that's expected to hit the Northeast U.S. overnight Friday. American, Delta, Southwest and other airlines waived change fees and fare differences for customers.
The forecast calls for freezing rain, sleet, and snow across Pennsylvania, with mountainous regions facing more severe conditions than the central areas.
The potential for flooding remains high because parts of the ground remain heavily saturated. Weather officials warn that rainfall will quickly turn into runoff.
Despite lower snow totals, a winter storm Friday is expected to bring “quite messy” conditions to the Lehigh Valley.
