An ice storm left thousands without power in southeast Michigan on Friday, December 26, as the National Weather Service (NWS) warned of freezing rain bringing dangerous walking or driving conditions to the region.
The ice accumulation caused several accidents, including multiple crashes on I-75 near Saginaw. The Michigan Department of Transportation's Bay Region, which covers the Mt. Pleasant, Saginaw, Flint and the Thumb areas of the state, reported at least six crashes that temporarily closed lanes along the freeway on Friday.
Crews are expected to return power to affected areas Saturday, with some estimated restoration times scheduled for later in the evening.

The Storm Alert Wx Team declared an Alert Day on Friday for up to a quarter-inch of ice accumulation in parts of Mid-Michigan during the day, which could affect driving conditions and add weight to trees or power lines.
Mecosta County is reporting the biggest number of outages, with nearly 5,000 customers impacted Friday afternoon.
